Severed cable disrupts web access December 20, 2008

Yesterday I was trying to connect to the internet … nothing … I was a bit angry, cause I had to do something, and it wasn’t working. But you know what, Skype was working, ironic cause here in UAE it is blocked! 🙂

After few hours I finally got connection. Today I read in news that internet and phone communications between Europe, the Middle East and Asia were severely disrupted after three undersea cables were damaged in the Mediterranean. It’s still unclear how the cables were damaged, but listen that, it is gonna take almost two weeks to fix damage.

Cable damage hits India, Qatar and UAE hardest, otherwise the cable system that was cut is known as South East Asia- Middle East-Western Europe 4 and it connects 12 countries: Pakistan, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy and France.

Most business to business traffic between Europe and Asia was being rerouted through the US, but regular communications between Europe and several Asian countries has been disrupted for few hours. Some sites still don’t work (youtube…), but really hope that they will fix everything soon!

Too Big to Fail December 15, 2008

There is a possibility that Dubai could fail. It’s not that Dubai is too big to fail, it is too important to fail.

Too important to the Rulers,
too important to the UAE,
too important to the region and
too important to the Eastern world
that has looked at Dubai as a haven to channel goods and cash,
to invest when the West said no to their money.

There is no doubt that there will be troubled times ahead, but talk of failure is embellishment too far.
Failure is a big word.

What we will see over the coming months is phasing and prioritising. Projects will come to fruition later and
some projects wont be undertaken at all – but that is smart business practice, and whether
you are a country or a company, that is how one should be operating at present.

UAE National Day December 9, 2008

on December 2nd was UAE’s 37th National Day

There were celebrations (parades, fireworks…) throughout the country.
Friends told me that I need to go on Jumeirah Beach road and join others driving up&down.
Why not, lets go! So me and Tomaž were almost 3 hours driving up&down and enjoying with others.

It was amazing! Hundreds of young men draped flags on their 4x4s and sports cars and plastered them with stickers of the nation’s rulers and the UAE flag. They were playing loud music, and everything it looked like a carnival or a celebration of winning an important football match 🙂

I can only say what a huge national pride!

I am here already for two weeks, but time run so fast every day that I totally forgot on you my friends, to get you know how am I doing.

Tomaž went back home yesterday, so first I tried to catch some sleep and get prepared for my second part of visit.

A feeling when I land on Dubai int. airport was amazing, I couldn’t wait to meet Sri, Saud, Abdulla, Thamir, Hala, Renata, Bong, Ali… many of my friends I still need to meet 🙂

Sri did me a huge favour and got me a place to stay for first week in Dubai Marina:) Sri, thanks a lot, you saved me again! Cause it was Tomaž’s first time in UAE, I need to showed him places, best party corners, introduced some of my friends…. He got a feeling about most of things, how everything works here, about people… Of course we also worked, but only half of a day 🙂

First time it happened that I had fun in Dubai also with my Slovene friends (Brane, Klementina & Urška), who were there same time as me, each with own reason – Brane is trying to start a business, Klementina came to visit her boyfriend and Urška came to enrol at the multimedia school. (more…)
